Chino Valley Medical Center recognized for superior outcomes in General Surgery, according to Healthgrades

Chino, Calif., October 20, 2020 – Chino Valley Medical Center is among the top five percent in the nation for general surgery, according to new research by Healthgrades, the leading resource that connects consumers, physicians, and health systems. Each year, Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance at nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 32 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions using Medicare data, and all-payer data from 16 states for bariatrics and appendectomy procedures.*

Chino Valley Medical Center is a member of Prime Healthcare, one of the nation’s largest health systems with 46 hospitals in 14 states. This year, Prime hospitals received a combined 295 awards from Healthgrades including 5-Star designations, Specialty Excellence Awards, and America’s 100 Best By Specialty.

Healthgrades Specialty Excellence Awards recognize hospitals with superior performance in specific specialty lines and special focus areas. From 2017-2019, patients treated at hospitals that did not get named among the top 5% in the nation for General Surgery are, on average, 1.40 times more likely to experience one or more complications or die in the hospital than if they were treated at hospitals that did receive the recognition.*

“The importance of hospital quality is top of mind for consumers, as they are becoming more aware of the differences in care provided by different hospitals. Consumers can feel confident knowing that hospitals that are recognized for their performance in general surgery provide high-quality care and superior outcomes,” said Dr. Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Healthgrades.

“Chino Valley Medical Center is honored to be named among the top hospitals recognized by Healthgrades for our diligent work and dedication to general surgery,” said Cheryl Gilliatt, MSN, RN, Chief Nursing Officer of Chino Valley Medical Center. “This award attests to our team of doctors, nurses, and technicians who provide quality specialty care to our patients every day.”

Chino Valley Medical Center was also recognized for the following clinical achievements:

  • Recipient of the Healthgrades 2021 General Surgery Excellence Award™
  • Five-Star Recipient for Gallbladder Removal Surgery for 8 Years in a Row (2014-2021)
  • Five-Star Recipient for Hip Fracture Treatment for 8 Years in a Row (2014-2021)
  • One of Healthgrades America’s 100 Best Hospitals for General Surgery™ in 2021

For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 45 million Medicare inpatient records for nearly 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide to assess hospital performance in 32 common conditions and procedures and evaluated comparative outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 16 states. Healthgrades recognizes a hospital’s quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance, and overall clinical quality. Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as 5-star (statistically significantly better than expected), 3-star (not statistically different from expected), and 1-star (statistically significantly worse than expected).
