The Daisy Award

The DAISY award, an international recognition program that honors the compassionate care nurses provide, is the brainchild of the DAISY foundation. Mark and Bonnie Barnes conceptualized the DAISY award in memory of Patrick Barnes, their son, who died from the autoimmune disease ITP in his early 30s. The Barnes family had witnessed the diligence and the commitment of the nurse who cared for Patrick a few months before he died. They established the DAISY award to recognize all such nurses who have made a difference in people’s lives.

“We were there to witness his nurses’ clinical skill that dealt with his very complex medical situation, their fast thinking that saved his life more than once, and the nursing excellence that took them years to hone to the best of the profession”, said Mark Barnes about the last eight weeks of his son’s life.

The Criteria For Nomination

The DAISY award comes with no complex requirements and aims to recognize the work of nurses who went above and beyond the call of their duty to help patients. However, the following are the metrics nurses must match to be eligible for the DAISY award.

• Act with Compassion and Empathy in any circumstance

• Exhibit exceptional clinical abilities in the provision of kind patient care.

• Maintain a good outlook and act professionally while at work.

• Exemplify the purpose, vision, and values of the organization they represent

• Establish a special connection with the patient and family.

Share Your Story

A stunning certificate, a DAISY Award pin, and a hand-carved stone sculpture called A Healer’s Touch will be presented to each DAISY Award Honoree at a public event in their unit. Additionally, cinnamon buns, a favourite of Patrick’s during his sickness, will be served to the entire unit as a celebration food.
